AdminPro 2.5: More Power For Users
More Control For Server Administrators
 
Craig Richards Design has announced a major update to AdminPro™ – the CGI testing and remote file management tool for web developers, CGI programmers and site or content administrators.
Version 2.5 adds functions and preference options often requested by users and some "access control" technologies have been built in that could make AdminPro safer to use – especially on servers that host virtual domains.
A web-based client/server application, AdminPro lets users perform all the routine file management and CGI development tasks right in a standard web browser. For many of its more than 70,000 users worldwide, separate FTP or Telnet software, text editing applications and other tools of the trade have become unnecessary since AdminPro has transformed their favorite Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator or other web browser from a passive viewer to an essential production tool. Hosting firms are enjoying a significant drop in support requests from their clients who, armed with AdminPro, can solve their own content and script error-related problems. AdminPro lets users navigate throughout their remote website, upload, download, rename, delete and chmod files as well as open, edit and save remote files (without first downloading them then re-uploading after editing), plus create, rename and remove directories. The compact interface reports each file's name, size, modification date/time and permissions (similar to an FTP client). The handy two-click CGI debugging remains one of the tool's most attractive functions.
However, some server administrators have expressed concern that AdminPro gives their regular clients near superuser-type access to the server - despite their use of symbolic links, file and path aliases and/or the use of CGIWrap or other stealth technologies.
An inept or malicious hosting client could potentially affect files on the server that they couldn't otherwise access.
