BigSender Administrator Guide

BigSender Gateway Manager plug-in

BigSender Gateway Manager is the plug-in that lets you install and administrate BigSender Gateways, each of which can manage a separate recipient list on your webserver.

A BigSender Gateway is a compact CGI that is powered by your single installation of BigSender but performs independently with its own unique Configurator settings.

Once you have logged in as the BigSender administrator, click on the "gateways" button among your admin controls in the user interface.

The resulting page contains your BigSender Gateway Manager index that is generated on-the-fly with all the BigSender Gateways you have installed sorted alphabetically by the name of the list each application manages, their locations (with a handy link to that app), an "initial settings" pulldown selector, and an "uninstall" button.

Installing a BigSender Gateway
  1. Type a name for the list your new installation will manage (you may change the list name any time in your that Gateway's Configurator).

  2. Type a location (from the domain root) and name for your new BigSender Gateway application. Type any existing directory in your domain. After the final slash (/) character, type the name of your BigSender Gateway. For example, /cgi-bin/bigsender2.cgi, etc.

Your new BigSender Gateway may either have a different path and the same name as those already listed in your Gateway Manager or it may have the same path and a different name. Be sure to type a file extension that is valid for Perl executables on your server such as .cgi, .pl or .plx, for examples.

If your server does not seem to permit execution of CGIs outside your /cgi-bin/ directory then please read the handy tipbelow.

  3. If you have already created a BigSender list and have Configurator settings most of which you would like to duplicate, use the initial settings pulldown selector and your new BigSender Gateway will begin with an exact copy of those Configurator settings. Leave it set on "default settings" and your new BigSender Gateway will be installed and, on first launch, you will be presented with BigSender's original default settings just like when you first launched BigSender after its purchase.

  4. Click on the "install gateway" button and the resulting page will notify you of any errors or will report a successful installation and your new Gateway will be included in the BigSender Gateway Manager index.

BigSender Gateway Manager will not install Gateways on different domains even if it is on the same server. Please reference your license agreement.

How To Execute CGIs Outside your /cgi-bin/ Directory

Advanced Tip: A simple line or two in a file named .htaccess located in your domain root directory or in the directory where you have installed a BigSender Gateway will instruct most Unix/Linux webservers to execute CGIs outside the /cgi-bin/ directory.
  1. Create a new ascii text document with Note Pad, Word Pad, SimpleText or other text editor.
  2. type the following as you see it here:
    Options FollowSymLinks ExecCGI Includes
    AddHandler cgi-script .cgi .pl

  3. Save your file as .htaccess (yes, it begins with a period) and upload to your server in ascii text mode wherever you want CGIs to execute or in your domain root if you want CGIs to execute no matter where they are located within your domain.

Uninstalling a BigSender Gateway

To permanetly delete a BigSender Gateway installation, click on the "uninstall" button that appears on the same line in the Gateway Manager index.

For extra security, your single installation of BigSender cannot be deleted via the Gateway Manager.

When you click the "uninstall" button, you may be presented with an alert in a popup window that allows you to continue with the delete or you may cancel it.

Upon successful uninstall of a BigSender Gateway, the following files are permanently deleted from the server:
    /path/bigsendergateway.cgi (the BigSender Gateway CGI)
/path/.bigsendergateway.txt (that BigSender Gateway's Configurator settings file)

The BigSender Gateway Manager does not remove any actual lists associated with a BigSender Gateway installation. TOP
