Your BigSender system includes the free Instant Updater plug-in (bs-updater.txt) which, when uploaded to your website along with the usual BigSender component files, inserts an "update" button among the administrator controls visible only to a logged-in administrator who has "settings" privileges.

As with the "gateways" button, the "update" button is only visible from the main BigSender installation, not from any BigSender Gateways. (Gateways are all powered by your single BigSender installation, so Gateways are automatically updated when BigSender is updated.)

administrator notice:
BigSender 3.81 is available: version history
Click the "update" button now and your
BigSender installation will be automatically updated.

BigSender Instant Updater features Automatic Update Notification: For the logged-in administrator, a message is inserted just above the Subscriber Form in the Main Menu indicating which BigSender release number is now available and the text in the "update" button also changes color from green to red (in most current web
browsers) as indicated here.

Whether or not the Automatic Notification indicates an update is available, you may update your BigSender installation to the latest release any time you like simply by clicking the "update" button. Usually taking only a few seconds, an interactive report displays in your web browser displaying a summary of each task performed by BigSender as BigSender and its component files are updated.

Typically, BigSender Instant Updater performs the following:
  1. Using modules from the standard LWP Perl Library (libwww-perl), the component reference file is accessed and parsed. The reference file tells BigSender which files are part of the BigSender system.
  2. One at a time, each component file is loaded directly from CraigRichards.com then written to your server.
  3. If on a Unix or Linux server, chmod (permissions are changed) as needed.
  4. Each file's modification date is checked to ensure the updated version was written.
  5. A completion message is displayed in your web browser if there were no errors.

For your installation of BigSender, you may have changed the application's name from "bigsender.cgi" to "bigsender.pl" or "mymailer.cgi" or anything else you prefer... When using Instant Updater, BigSender detects its own name and automatically renames the updated version accordingly.

Instant Updater will also change the CGI's first line, the path to Perl (sometimes referred to as the "shebang") from #!/usr/bin/perl to whatever your current BigSender installation is using.

Reasons Instant Updater May Not Be Accessible
  • The Instant Updater feature is only accessible to logged-in administrators who have "settings" privileges.

  • BigSender automatically queries the server for the location of the standard LWP (libwww-perl) library and, if not found, the "update" button may not appear.

  • Some servers do not correctly report the existence of the LWP library and, for such cases, a workaround has been developed and is freely available to any BigSender licensee on request.

  • Some server administrators do not automatically install the complete set of standard libraries that come with the Perl interpreter and you may need to ask them to install the LWP (libwww-perl) library or to ensure its location is properly added to the %INC array. (Don't worry, your server administrator will know what all that means!) Most hosting firms will do that for you without charge since LWP is free.
