Craig Richards' Whois Search Button
for finding available domain names based on selected text

Add my handy Whois Search Button to your browser's Toolbar to instantly search for an available domain name based on a highlighted word on any webpage!

Setting it up is free – and easy! Just follow the steps below to put the Whois Button on the Toolbar in your Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator.

Add the Whois Search Button to
Your Toolbar in Internet Explorer 4.0 or Greater
(Windows)
For IE or Netscape on a Macintosh, use Netscape Setup below.
  1. Ensure the Personal Toolbar is visible. If it is not visible, right-click on the Toolbar and make sure 'Links' is checked.
  2. Drag this Whois link onto the Links Toolbar. A button labeled "Whois" should appear on the Links Toolbar with an Internet Explorer icon. (As you drag the link, you may see a circle with a line through it until you reach a point on the Toolbar that is next to an existing button. When you see a thick black vertical line where you want the button to go, you can drop the link.)
Now from any text you're viewing within your browser, you can highlight a word and click on the Whois button in your Links Toolbar to instantly search the whois database to see if that word is available as a domain name. Results are provided in a new browser window. If you click on your new Whois button without selecting text, a popup dialog box will prompt you to type a domain name.

Pages that include frames or other dynamic features may hinder the functionality of your Whois button.

To remove the button from Internet Explorer: 1) Place your cursor over the button and right click. 2) Select 'Delete' from the options.  3) Select 'Yes.'

Add the Whois Search Button to
Your Toolbar in Netscape Communicator 4.0+ or Firefox

(Users on the MacOS, follow this setup.)
  1. Ensure the Personal Toolbar is visible. If it is not visible, click on the 'View' menu item and select 'Show Personal Toolbar.'
  2. Drag this Whois link onto the Personal Toolbar. A button labeled "Whois" should then appear on the Personal Toolbar. (As you drag the link, you will see a circle with a line through it until you reach the Toolbar.)
Now from any text you're viewing in your browser, you can highlight any word (if double-clicking does not work, try swiping the word to highlight it) and click on the Whois button in your Personal Toolbar to instantly search the whois database to see if that word is available as a domain name. Results are provided in a new browser window. If you click on your Whois button without selecting a word, a dialog box will prompt you to select a word.

Pages that include frames or other dynamic features may hinder the functionality of your Whois button.

To remove the button from Netscape: 1) Click on the "Bookmarks" button on your Toolbar and select 'Edit Bookmarks...'   2) Locate the 'Personal Toolbar Folder' and select the item in that folder called "Whois" (or whatever you may have named the button).  3) Right-click on your selection and select the 'Delete' option.
